Our favorite Easter books!!
We have been working hard to find and share with you some great books to add to your Easter experience. Here’s my daughter, my research assistant, at the bookstore taking this task very seriously.
It was not work for us at ALL though in that we are a family that loves books! I shared with you one of my best kept secrets at Christmas that I want to remind you of now–It is best to hit the libraries NOW (or really yesterday) to hunt, find, and check out your Easter books. If you wait too long they get checked out! So don’t wait!! Load up the kids and go OR make a date with Amazon and order some of these treasures!
Let’s start with some favorites that tell the Easter Story:
All five of these books are wonderful representations of the Biblical account of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our personal favorite is The Easter Story by Brian Wildsmith because of the pictures!
If you have older kids The Easter Story for Children by Max Lucado is a bit more meaty. If you have young children, The Very First Easter from the Beginner’s Bible is a great recount for its simplicity and vivid pictures.
Easter in the Garden by Pamela Kennedy tells the Easter Story from a little boy’s perspective who happens to come upon the greatest moment of Easter quite by accident. And Carol Heyer’s, Easter Story, is just such a classic! You can’t go wrong with any of these!
Books with activities to make an impression:
Each of these books has created some wonderful memories at our house. My kids love to color Easter eggs after we read The Legend of the Easter Egg by Lori Walburg. Have you ever blown out the center of Easter eggs? I know, so fun right?! Well you can learn how if you read The Story of the Easter Robin by Dandi Daley Mackall.
Chris Auer tells us what the five slits in a sand dollar represent in The Legend of the Sand dollar. Trust me, you will love finding out! And then there are the beloved Berenstain Bears! This book is told from the perspective of an Easter play. You will love the fun stickers and it just might inspire your children to do their own Easter play! Want to add some beauty to your home? We have enjoyed reading The Parable of the Lily by Liz Curtis Higgs while making our own lilies or planting our own.
So many possibilities with these treasured books!
But really these next five are OUR ABSOLUTE FAVS (Yes, I know I have a book obsession)!!
Our Top Five (You MUST read these to your family!):
A Child’s Easter by Patricia A. Pingry is such a sweet book! She takes your children through the Easter story through the eyes of a child, and every page is filled with a simple truth for them to hide in their heart about their loving Savior. It’s so good!! The Tale of the Three Trees by Angela Elwell Hunt is a wonderful book to read at Easter or Christmas. You find out how three trees are used to fulfill a specific purpose in the life of Jesus. (There is a great DVD of this book as well!)
Benjamin’s Box by Melody Carlson is our absolute favorite to read the week leading up to Easter. This book uses the Resurrection Eggs to tell the story of the ministry of Jesus all the way to the empty tomb. My kids love to open the egg to find the surprise inside and remember all the stories we have read over the weeks leading up to Easter.
The next two books are just down right fun and delightful. Miss Fannie’s Hat by Jan Karon is a wonderful story of a granny who loves to wear hats and donates her favorite one to the church for auction. The ending is just so great I’m not going to tell you! You have to read it to find out! And oh, we cannot forget Humphrey! He delighted us at Christmas time as well but now he is back with a brand new book called Humphrey’s First Palm Sunday by Carol Heyer. Your kids will laugh while learning about the triumphant entry!
These have been a great joy to our family. I hope you all will get a chance to experience some of them too!
Do you have a favorite? Please share because I absolutely love reading a new book in case you couldn’t tell!
